Former Notre Dame Fighting Irish & NFL Standout Irv Smith to Headline Upcoming 5th Annual Dan Devine Memorial Golf Tournament
Former Notre Dame All-American and NFL tight-end Irv Smith will play in the Notre Dame Club of Phoenix's Fifth Annual Dan Devine Memorial Golf Tournament, and serve as the keynote speaker following conclusion of play. After being selected in the 1st round (20th overall) of the 1993 NFL Draft, Irv successfully caught spirals thrown to him during seven seasons of action with the New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns.
The Dan Devine Memorial Golf Tournament is held annually and honors the legacy of former Notre Dame football coach, Dan Devine, who led the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to the 1977 National Championship. Coach Devine's ties to the State of Arizona began on February 5, 1955 when he accepted his first collegiate head coaching position at Arizona State University. During his three years with the Sun Devils, coach Devine compiled a record of 27-3-1, including a spotless 10-0 mark during his final campaign. After retiring from coaching, Coach Devine returned to Arizona for several years and served as a fundraiser for Arizona State's Sun Devil Foundation.
The 5th Annual Dan Devine Memorial Golf Tournament will take place on Saturday, April 5, 2008 at the beautiful Legacy Golf Resort, centrally located at 6808 South 32nd Street in Phoenix. Please join Irv Smith, members of the Devine family, the Notre Dame Club of Phoenix, and several former Notre Dame players in enjoying an afternoon of golf and camaraderie. Post tournament festivities will include a fabulous dinner, awards ceremony, silent auction, and a special message from our keynote speaker, Irv Smith. This promises to be one of the premier events of the year!
The deadline for discount registration at $175.00 is March 15, 2008. Final registration (at $200 per player) closes on March 29, 2008. Space is limited to the first 144 golfers to register. A limited number of registrations are available to individuals who are unable to golf but wish to enjoy dinner and other post tournament activities. All proceeds from the tournament will fund academic scholarships for Notre Dame students from the State of Arizona.
