Hesburgh Lectures
Lifelong learning is a key aspect of a lifelong relationship with the University. The Notre Dame Club of Phoenix sponsors two Hesburgh Lectures each year, in the spring and fall. The Hesburgh Lecture Series brings a taste of Notre Dame's academic excellence to valley alumni and the local communities by bringing distinguished Notre Dame professors to discuss various topics.  The Hesburgh Lectures are open to the public and are offered free of charge.

Our Spring 2008 Lecture featured Professor Harvey Bender, who presented the topic: Genetic Enhancement and the Brave New Millennium: Science, Politics and the Human Genome.

Excellence In Teaching

The Club also sponsors local teachers to attend the Excellence in Teaching Conference at Notre Dame, where teachers, principals and counselors have the opportunity to grow and develop their vocation as educators.  The Club covers all expenses related to   In 2007, the Notre Dame Club of Phoenix sponsored three teachers for the conference.

Our 2007 attendees commented on the conference:  "Even after 23 years of teaching... I still learned something new... The conference taught me something about myself as well as my students."

"I was blown away with all the little strategies that I (learned to) improve student achievement."

"The interactive approach to the conference emphasized key concepts and fostered a sense of community among the participants in only a couple of days.  There was a knowing laughter, teamork, sharing, and a spirit of togetherness that I have not seen at any other conference in my 12 years of teaching."

If you are an educator and are interested in having the Club sponsor you for the Conference or you would like to nominate a teacher, you can download our application form here.  (In Word format)

In addition to the Club's activities, Notre Dame participates in the OpenCourseWare Consortium, which allows free public access to course materials from a number of colleges and universities around the world.  With OCW, you can follow a number of classes at Notre Dame in a variety of subjects, with access to the same course material, readings, and discussion questions used in the classes on campus.  You can also follow classes at other member institutions, such as MIT and UC Berkeley.  You can find out more about Notre Dame OCW here.

Breaking News

Hands & Hope for Haiti
This fall, ND alumni and current students will join together to collect 25,000 pounds of clothing for the people of Haiti. The Hands & Hope for Haiti clothing drive will take place on campus from Oct. 4 until the ND-Pittsburgh football game (Nov. 1).

There will be a friendly competition between alumni and current students to see which group can collect the most clothing. The type of clothing that is needed is good quality spring and summer clothing, as well as very gently used footwear. (Please note: winter clothing, as well as clothing in extra large sizes, will not be usable to the people of Haiti, therefore we ask that these be excluded from your contributions.)

Please help the people of Haiti by bringing clothing to the game watches in order to be donated. We hope to join together with other alumni in order to collect more clothing than the students, but more importantly, we would like to be able to provide support and resources to those in need. Thanks for your help!
